When a monumental challenge rises up
in the midst of everyday life that throws off our equilibrium or even our
feeling of safety, the impact of such an event can cause a separation of time
within the mind. This pivotal point that
originates as a mile marker in the heart naturally identifies moments in life
as occurring before the event or after the event.
Some might utilize this concept when
referring to before children or after marriage, but more often than not, it’s
the arrival of a devastating event that draws that proverbial line in the sand
within our hearts and minds. These
moments are etched in stone, never to be erased…at least not in this
reality…not in this lifetime.
We were going along in innocence,
enjoying a mountain top experience. That
was before the event. The journey up the
mountain wasn’t necessarily smooth going.
There were some bumps on the road and a few steep inclines. Certain obstacles provided opportunity for us
to learn about each other and ourselves.
At last we were content, enjoying the view from the top, and preparing
for a slow, smooth descent.
The icing on the cake was to end our
travels…to swallow up the last of our adventurous vacation with comfort and
familiarity …aunts, uncles, cousins we’d enjoyed countless times. But coming off that mountain, and heading
into the valley felt more like falling off a cliff and hitting every jagged
rock at the bottom. We know now that the
rest of life will always be considered…after the event.
